How to Get Into PA School: Expert Pre-PA Advising from the National PA Student of the Year 🌟

Feeling overwhelmed by the PA school application process and unsure how to navigate it? You’re not alone. I was in your shoes just a few years ago. The path to PA school is filled with scattered advice, endless deadlines, and constant pressure to stand out amongst over 30,000 applicants. You’re probably juggling patient care hours, prerequisites, and life in general—all while questioning the likelihood of actually getting accepted into PA school.

Note: Each admissions cycle, approximately 20% to 31% of PA school applicants are accepted, with around 25% of applicants being re-applicants. Program-specific acceptance rates range from 2% to 50%. However, most PA programs have acceptance rates under 15%.

You might be wondering:

  • Which PA programs should I apply to?
  • How many PA programs should I apply to?
  • Is my personal statement good?
  • What if my GPA is low?
  • What counts as patient care experience (PCE) versus healthcare experience (HCE)Opens in a new tab.?
  • Do I have enough PCE hours?
  • Do I need shadowing hours?
  • What should I do differently if I’m a re-applicant?
  • How should I prepare for PA school interviews?
  • Should I apply this cycle or wait another year?

If you’re looking for expert guidance to help you through every step of the PA school admissions process, you’ve come to the right place! You don’t have to figure this out alone or waste another cycle making avoidable mistakes. I’m here to give you the roadmap, support, and insider knowledge that you need to succeed. 😊

My Story & Credentials

Welcome to my website! My name is Phoebe, and I’m currently a practicing PA in New York City. However, just a few short years ago, I was stressed out about the prospect of getting into PA school and determined to figure things out,

Unlike most pre-PAs though, I didn’t apply with a “perfect” timeline. In fact, I made the decision to apply to PA school just three months before the next cycle opened, which sounds kind of crazy looking back on it now. This meant that I was simultaneously working to accumulate more PCE hours, completing prerequisite courses, and managing every detail of the CASPA application—from transcripts and letters of recommendation to my personal statement—all within an extremely compressed timeline. At the time, I pretty much only knew one PA and one pre-PA, so I was navigating the PA school application process pretty much on my own.

However, once I was committed to applying to PA school on short notice, I became laser-focused on understanding the application process inside and out, refining my strategy, and crafting an application that told my unique story—and it paid off. I probably read every article about PA school applications that appeared on the first twenty pages of my Google search. I compiled information from countless sources and forums, filtered out the unhelpful advice, and built a personalized application strategy from the ground up. Ultimately, I managed to land several interviews at top PA programs and got into PA school during my first application cycle.

Note: The takeaway here isn’t that everyone should apply on a tight timeline—it definitely was not a fun time. However, I wanted to show you that if I was able to apply and get into PA school on a compressed timeline, then you absolutely can too, especially with more time, proper planning, and strategic guidance.

In PA school, I graduated summa cum laude, earned several awards—including the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) 2025 PA Student of the Year Award—and received numerous scholarships. Fast forward, I have now graduated from PA school and will be starting my new position as a surgical PA at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Below is a bit more about what I’ve accomplished during my time as a PA student:

Honors & Distinctions
  • AAPA 2025 PA Student of the Year Award RecipientOpens in a new tab.: Recognized nationally for exceptional service, leadership, and professionalism
  • Camille Kiefer Award Recipient: Recognized by faculty for outstanding service to the community and PA profession

  • Pi Alpha Honor Society Inductee: Inducted into the national PA honor society
  • Scholarship Recipient: Awarded scholarships from the American Association of Surgical PAs (AASPA), New York State Society of PAs (NYSSPA), and Honolulu Federal Credit Union (HOCU)
Leadership
  • AAPA House of Delegates Student Delegation Chief Delegate & Student Delegate: Served on the AAPA Student Academy Board of Directors and passed policies on robotic surgery & artificial intelligence
  • PA History Society (PAHx) Student Trustee
  • New York State Society of PAs (NYSSPA) PA Student Director
Advocacy
  • AAPA Leadership & Advocacy Summit (LAS) Attendee: Advocated for patients and the PA profession on Capitol Hill
  • Panelist: Spoke at the AAPA Pre-PA Mixers, LAS, Stanford COMET PA Panel, Annual Seton Hall PA Advocacy Panel, and state chapter meetings
  • Founder of HowMedWorks: Founded a healthcare advocacy website

I’m not sharing this to brag but rather to highlight how my journey has given me perspective from nearly every angle of the PA path: pre-PA, PA student, leader, mentor, and now certified PA. I understand not only what it takes to get accepted but also how the choices you make now influence your entire PA journey.

As time has passed, I’ve consistently received a high volume of questions from driven pre-PAs about timelines, personal statements, and overall strategy. While I’m always happy to help, I’ve noticed that the most successful students are those who commit time, energy, and resources to longer-term collaboration. That’s why I created a dedicated way for highly motivated pre-PAs to book my time and receive focused, personalized guidance.

Fun fact: Before PA school, I was an academic tutor and private piano and violin teacher!

Let’s Talk About Cost (Honestly)

An Honest Note on Coaching, Cost & Commitment

Do you need coaching to get into PA school?

Absolutely not.

There is no “secret” to admissions that requires a credit card to unlock. Thousands of applicants get accepted using free resources, mentorship, and peer support. If you are organized and confident, I encourage you to trust your capabilities.

Who is this for?

My pre-PA advising is for applicants who want to approach the application process efficiently, avoid costly mistakes, and make everything as smooth and stress-free as possible. It is for those who want another pair of objective, critical eyes on their entire application every step of the way before hitting submit.

Why is this a paid investment?

I charge for these services for two specific reasons:

1. Quality takes time.

Thorough essay reviews and strategy plans are incredibly time-consuming. I don’t skim, and I treat your application with the same amount of dedication, effort, and attention to detail that I put into my own.

2. Expertise matters.

Having self-navigated the PA school application process on a fast timeline and later excelling in PA school, I understand what it really takes to succeed. I’ve spoken at several pre-PA events and helped many aspiring PAs successfully gain admission to PA school. I also share tips and strategies that aren’t widely discussed, which can make a real difference in helping your application stand out.

Note: If coaching isn’t financially feasible right now, that’s completely okay. Your financial stability comes first. In the meantime, feel free to explore the other free resources available on my website.

I want to be completely upfront with you. Coaching is an investment—both financially and time-wise. However, what I’ve seen time and again is that pre-PA coaching becomes one of the most valuable assets in a student’s entire PA journey. To give a bit of context: when I applied, I easily spent five figures in just one year on applications, courses, exams, etc. PA school itself? That’s a six-figure investment for most students. With that in mind, getting personalized guidance before you submit your application can dramatically improve the return on everything you’re already spending.

Note: You’re not just getting coaching sessions, essay reviews, and interview practice; you’re gaining specific insights from someone who is heavily involved in multiple facets of the profession, in addition to a knowledgeable contact who understands your specific journey and who you can reach out to throughout this process and even later on as questions come up. It’s about setting you up for success now and having support when you need it later down the road.

Additionally, I’ve intentionally kept my rates on the lower end, especially compared to many other services out there, because I know firsthand how expensive the PA school application process can be, especially without outside financial support. (I fully funded every aspect of my PA school application so I understand that every dollar matters.) I want high-quality advising to be accessible for pre-PAs who are doing this independently as well.

Final Thoughts

Like everything else I do with HowMedWorks, my goal is to share what I’ve learned and make things easier for you! There’s no reason you should be struggling with the same challenges I’ve already found ways to overcome. (Remember, the application process might be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be hard.)

The truth is, most PA school applicants waste time on things that don’t really move the needle. They follow generic advice that doesn’t fit their situation and miss opportunities to strengthen their application in ways that actually matter. The pre-PA phase is full of stress and uncertainty, and that’s exactly why having a clear plan and someone who understands the process is so important.
